Sphagnum Moss - Mixed Brown, Red, and Green
Sphagnum Moss - Mixed Brown, Red, and Green
My kettle pond is the home for a number of sphagnum species. It is predominately brown, reds, with some greenish species. I am still learning moss identification, it is fascinating. The moss mat is home to a lot of smaller varieties of plants. If you are into bog gardens, fairy gardens, or growing carnivorous plants with a sphagnum groundcover this is for you. I have included some pictures of my typical moss collection showing Bog Rosemary (Andromeda polifolia), Round Leaf Sundew (Drosera rotundifolia), and Bog Cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccos) that may be part of the moss I send you.
If you trim off the top 3 - 4 inches of the sphagnum and snuggly arrange the heads upright in a pot they can grow and form a living mulch. You need to mist them daily, at least, to keep the humidity up. Sphagnum moss as a ground cover works really well for carnivorous plants especially. I will send you a quart ziplock bag of the moss.
